  • First iteration of the toolbox lacked student feedback and perspective

  • Further perspective and human-centered design needed to provide students with resources to help them land jobs

  • Scheduled and communicated ~30 student focus group sessions with undergraduate and graduate GSU students

  • Created on boarding materials for sessions including welcome emails and foundational information

  • Created interview questions, an interview tracking system and interview documentation

  • Conducted interviews over the span of one week

  • Collated and reported results to SMEs including a director of the Robinson College of Business

  • Created page templates for the entire course to streamline the buildout process

 

Interviews for Georgia State university’s welcome module

Historical Challenges

  • Faculty reported students having difficulty navigating the LMS and getting organized for the start of each semester

  • Design team unaware of the planning and organizational needs of students

Design Solutions

  • Designed a “Welcome Module” to be deployed into each course at GSU that would help facilitate the start of each students’ semester

  • Interviewed 3 students pre and out design to inquire about their organizational and planning habits

  • Developed a series of interview questions and an interview focus group system

  • Analyzed and summarized results

  • Made design suggested and design-based changes based on results of interviews

  • Designed an empathy mapping activity for designers to compete with faculty

  • Encouraged faculty to consider what students are doing, seeing, thinking and feeling in the classroom for a more pointed perspective on their challenges, motivations and goals

 

User Personas for Harvard University’s Project Zero

  • Understanding how educators interacted with the current online educator forum and how Harvard’s online platform could better support educators’ needs

Design Solutions

  • Reviewed feedback from educators using the online educator forum

  • Categorized and presented the challenges that educators faced when using then forum

  • Created user personas to articulate educator needs to the team

  • Pitched solutions for each type of educator

 

Qualitative Research for Harvard University’s Project Zero

Historical Challenges

  • Understanding the needs of educators at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Translating the educators’ needs into actionable solutions

Design Solutions

  • Created an AirTable sheet (an interactive spreadsheet)

  • Reviewed education news site for articles with the following criteria:

    1. within the week of 4/9 - 4/16

    2. articles related to K-12 education as it related to COVID-19

    3. articles related to higher education and COVID-19 that can inform OoEL

  • Listed basic details of ~75 articles in Airtable (Name, Source, Link, Theme)

  • Calculated the frequency of each theme

  • Listed the most frequent themes with information from those articles in Learning Landscapes

  • Listed discussion prompts which could potentially be used on the Educator Forum

  • The integration of computer science into various disciplines in school

  • English language learners are left out of technology-based curricula due to linguistic barriers

  • English language educators may not have the training nor understanding of how to incorporate computer science, computer science themes, and technology to teach English language learners

Design Solutions

  • Designed a prototype of the user experience for an online course for English language professionals to acquire, create, connect and teach in computer science

  • Included of diverse characters that shift the computer science clubhouse narrative to more inclusive learners and learning experiences

  • Incorporated the use of Scratch from MIT as the basis for learning the basics of computer science and English language education

  • Added elements of social media to create a community of learning
